Around the Coast of Britain in my Motorhome

Good morning
This is my 4th day back in Chudleigh and although I am missing being out on the road I am also enjoying being home.
Everyone has been very kind and welcomed both Simon and me home( not forgetting Murphy) with quite a few donations coming in.
A BIG thank you to everyone who has donated but I also realise that there are so many charities out there that to give to all of them would not be possible.

I will now finish off the last few days of the trip.

Friday :
Packed everything up, sat in the sun with a cup of tea and read my book then I drove to Corfe Castle, Elsie followed in her car.
While Elsie stayed in the car park painting a picture of the Castle I walked with Murphy up the hill to the Castle, had a good look around then walked around the village and back down to the Camper.

Our next stop was Lulworth Cove, heaving with tourists and school groups studying the coastline.
Walked along the coast, took some photo's then met Simon and Noel for a drink before they set off cycling again.

We dove past Weymouth and set up camp at West Fleet on a flat piece of grass, unwound the awning, put out the table and chairs, sat in the sun and waited for the cyclists to arrive.
Had Dinner, relaxed had a drink and a chat until bedtime.

Saturday :
Simon and Noel set off about 9.30, we left Fleet and made our way to Abbotsbury Swannery, spent a couple of hours watching hundreds of swans feeding, learning about the history of the Swannery and finding our way around the Maze.
We then made our way to Charmouth to look for fossils, the place was full of people all with the same idea so decided to return another day.
Stayed there for lunch and again met Simon and Noel as they cycled the coast.
Made our way to the campsite at Salcombe Regis, set everything up and took it easy in the sun.

Sunday :
Simon set off with 4 friends for the last leg of his epic journey around the coast of Britain.
Elsie left at about 10.00 and I left at 11.30 making my way to Exmouth, Starcross, Dawlish, Teignmouth over Shaldon bridge to Babbacombe, Torquay, Paignton and arriving at Dartmouth via the ferry from Kingswear at about 2.00.
Had lunch with Jean, Ken, Joanne and Steve, Guy, Lisa and Stanley. then waited as other friends and relatives arrived.
Met up with Harriet and Dean and waited for the cyclists to arrive.
At about 4.15 the group which had increased in number arrived with Simon at the front to a grand reception from all the well wishers.
He was presented with a cake decorated with "Cycle the Lights" made by Kate.
A BIG thank you to Alf Resco's who stayed open for the afternoon giving them drinks etc.

I then returned home to Chudleigh, unloaded some of the camper, parked up and went indoors to find that Harriet and Dean had got the house tidy and dusted.
Harriet made me a cup of tea and Dean presented me with a Bargain Bucket of Kentucky Fried Chicken.
A great end to my trip and I will resume my diet tomorrow.

Bought some flowers, went down the cemetery, sat for a while trying to decide my plans for the future and decided take life as it comes and see where it leads.
I am sure there many good things ahead.

I would like to finish by saying how proud I am of Simon's great achievement as only I know what he really went through on parts of the trip so WELL DONE.

Hi
Hard to believe we have been away for three and a half months with only 3 days to go.
We have had a brilliant trip and I will be sorry when it ends but I am also looking forward to getting home and sorting everything out.

Monday :
I drove to Southampton to the Red Funnel Ferry Terminal in plenty of time, boarded the Ferry and took Murphy onto the top deck for the 55 minute trip to East Cowes Isle of Wight.
Lovely weather and great trip with calm water and plenty to see.
I drove around the east coast of the island to Ryde, Bembridge and Sandown reaching the campsite near Shanklin just as Simon and Noel arrived from a different direction. Elsie arrived half an hour later.
The pitch was on grass (which we prefer if it is dry ) large and flat with plenty of room for the camper, one car, 4 people, 1 dog and 2 tents.
The site was Ninham Country Holidays touring park Tel. 01983 864243 who very kindly allowed us to stay for half price so a big Thank You.
Sat around in the evening eating, drinking and talking until bedtime.

Tuesday :
Simon and Noel set off fairly early, when we were ready Elsie followed me in her car around the rest of the island.
We went to Ventnor, Niton and stopped at Blackgang Chine where we went around The Disappearing Village with a new exhibition based on the tv series " Coast".well worth the 4.50 entrance charge.
Took us about 2 hours to see everything then drove to the Needles lighthouse at Alum Bay where we met Simon and Noel who stopped for a cup of tea then off again as they still had a long ride to East Cowes where we all stopped for the night.
Wednesday :
I caught the Ferry at 11.00 to Southampton, Elsie caught hers to Portsmouth at 9.00 and Simon and Noel caught the 10.30 to Southampton.
We each went our own way, I went to Lymington, Christchurch, Bournemouth and Poole before making my way to our next campsite at Herston near Swanage, had 2 large pitches on grass so I set up the camper, wound out the large awning, put out the table and chairs, put the kettle on and waited for the rest to arrive.
Great evening just chilling out in the evening sun.

Thursday :
After Breakfast we sat around reading then we all ( including Murphy ) walked to the train station and caught a Steam Train to Swanage where we spent about 4 hours looking around, had lunch and sampled the local Piddle Ale.
Did a shop then caught the Steam Train back to the campsite where we all collapsed in the heat and in no time we were all asleep.
We are now preparing the evening meal, they are having Curry and I am having hot smoked Salmon Ploughmans.

Friday :
Simon spent the day in Brighton, I decided to chill out at the campsite, I wound the Awning out, put out the table and chairs and read my book in the sun.
Took Murphy for a walk, had coffee with a couple in a neibouring motorhome and then watched the football.
Saturday :
Justine ( Daniels Partner)and Neve came to see me on Saturday morning, we had tea in the sun then I was driven into Brighton.
We had a good look around The Lanes shopping area and was impressed by Snoopers Paradise a lot of small shops within a large shop full of so many collectables I could have browsed all day.
We met Simon had lunch and sat in the park.
While Simon and Justine had a drink Neve and I went for a look around the Pavilion , blown away by the magnificent Dining and Music rooms probably the best rooms I have ever seen, highly recommended if you are in Brighton.
When we came out Jeff (Daniels friend) and Zoe had joined Simon and Justine for a drink, I then had a cab back to the campsite took Murphy for a walk and Justine came and collected us both drove us back to her place and cooked us an evening meal which we ate in the garden.
Simon and I had a cab back late evening luckily the cab driver was ok with Murphy on my lap.
Got back and went to bed.
Sunday :
Simon rode off to Brighton where he met up with some mates who cycled part of the way with him.
Justine and Neve came to see me again, we sat in the sun,they helped me pack up, took me to Asda for a shop and then we went to a cafe for light lunch.
I then set off on my days trip through Brighton, Hove, Worthing stopping to take in the views then finished at Bognor Regis where we stopped for the night.
We were joined by Elsie ( Simon's Girlfriend ) and Noel ( Simon's Friend ) who have joined us for the rest of the trip.
Off to the Isle of Wight now so I will let you know how we get on.

Thursday 24th June

Sunday afternoon :
While we walked around Tankerton Simon's friends Warren and Claire + baby Layla ? were in the area and joined us at the Fete, had a good afternoon, watched a couple of vintage planes do a couple of bypasses then walked back to the site for a quiet evening.
Monday :
I drove to Herne Bay onto Margate, Broadstairs And Ramsgate down through Sandwich (amused to also see a sign for the village of Ham ) and down for a stop at Deal.
Next stop was the National Trust site of the " White Cliffs of Dover ", Walked along the clifftop in the sun with Murphy and watched the Ships docking loading with Lorries and setting off for wherever then the next ships would arrive, just to think this is going on 24/7.
Had a pot of tea at the cafe but to my dismay I was informed that 2 coach loads of Italians had devoured all the food except Cakes and Crisps and I am off both of those.
Made my way to Folkestone then to our Campsite at Hythe, set everything up and took Murphy for a walk around a large dog walk on the site.
Tuesday :
Simon"s friend Rob arrived from London to ride for 1 day. Rob rode the spare bike and I met them in the afternoon at Dungeness. What an amazing place, Large Power Station, 2 Lighthouses and the whole area was covered by Shacks, some made from old railway carriages, some made from bits of wood and galvanise but not unsightly just interesting.
I climbed to the top of the Lighthouse and what a view 360 degrees?
When Simon and Rob arrived I looked after the bikes while they climbed to the top of the Lighthouse.
We had a cup of tea in the cafe and watched the smallest Public train pull into the station, fill up with passengers and off again to Hythe, about an Hour trip each way, the carriages were very small like at Paignton Zoo.
Went to Rye then onto Fairlight Wood campsite set in woods, very small and quiet and great sunshine.
When Simon and Rob arrived Rob said he was blown away by the ride and would have liked to ride till the end of the trip but he had to get back for work.
I drove Rob to Hastings to catch the train home then Simon and I returned to the campsite for a peaceful evening. ( nearly finished my book " The girl who kicked the Hornets nest")
Wednesday :
Through Hastings to Bexhill onto Eastbourne then stopping at Beachy Head for a couple of hours relaxing on the clifftop, had a long conversation with a chaplain who was 1 of 16 who regularly patrol the clifftop trying to stop people from committing suicide in fact they had 2 call outs this morning both ended OK.
Travelled on to Seaforth and Newhaven where I met Simon and Mark (Lofty) who was riding with Simon for the day, they were making their way to Brighton to watch the football.
I drove to Sheepcote Valley campsite and booked in for 4 days.
Set up the tv and watched the Football (that was a bit better ).

Went for a walk to Brighton Marina, heard a Fire engine and unfortunately for a young lad his VW camper caught fire and was totally destroyed, black smoke everywhere.

Thursday :
Simon and I walked to Asda at the Marina did a shop and walked back, had lunch and Simon rode into Brighton to meet a friend.

Monday 21st June am

Good morning
Thursday :
Drove to Winterton on Sea then stopped at Great Yarmouth for a walk around then through Lowestoft and Southwold stopping the night near Leiston.
Friday :
Went to Woodbridge past Ipswich and stopped at Tiptree where I visited the Wilkin and Sons Tiptree Jam Factory.
Spent some time looking around the Jam Museum, resisted the temptation to have a Cream Tea with Tiptree Preserves but spent a few pounds on Jams etc. in the shop.
Very enjoyable couple of hours.
Then parked in a field at Saltcote near Maldon, we had the whole field to ourselves.
Took Murphy for a walk to Decoy Point on the estuary, saw a Causeway leading to an island which turned out to be Osea Island, a bird sanctuary but also a Rehab centre for the rich and famous.
The island is completely cut off at high tide.
Had a good relaxing stay even though in the next field a group of Morris Dancers camped for the night, we expected some noise but they were fine.
Watched England mess things up again then went to bed
Saturday :
Went to Chelsford to visit Sandy one of Ann's oldest friend, had a chat and a cup of coffee then we went to her Son and Daughter in laws house( Alexander and Jane ) for lunch, met their daughter Amilia ?? then realized I had to get to Whitstable by 6.00 as that is when they shut the gates to the campsite.
Got there at 5.50 but I had been misinformed as when I got to the site there were no gates just the reception was closed.
When Simon arrived I took Murphy for his walk along the seafront towards Herne Bay, lovely evening.
Sunday :
Simon had a day off so we walked to Tankerton where on the green beside the sea was a fete in aid of various charities, lovely sunny day, lots to see and do.
I have got five minutes to leave the campsite so all for now

Hi everyone
Tuesday :
Drove from Sandringham through Hunstanton along the coast to the Muckleburgh Collection at the Weybourne Military Camp.
A museum of Military Vehicles, Uniforms and Weapons including a Harrier Jump Jet, a Doodlebug and Surface to Air Missiles.
Spent about 2 hours there, waited for Simon and then had late lunch while working out where we would stop for the night deciding on a site near Cromer.
Parked near the clifftop with great walks along the coast.
Wednesday :
Day off for Simon so we caught the bus and spent most of the day in Cromer looking around the book shops and Collectors shops, had lunch and finished the day by climbing up a stone spiral staircase with over 160 stairs to the roof of the tower with an amazing view over the town.
Back at the campsite we chilled out in the sun reading until bedtime.

Good Morning
Saturday :
Harriet and I walked Murphy along the clifftop for an hour then we had breakfast and started our journey down the coast past Hornsea and stopping at Withernsea where we looked around the market had breakfast and walked through the town.
We then drove down to the nature reserve at Spurn Head where we could look across to Grimsby and Cleethorpes, we carried on through flat fairly uninteresting countryside through Kingston upon Hull over the Humber Bridge to a quiet, clean campsite almost under the bridge at Barton upon Humber.
After pitching the tent on a flat grass pitch we set up the TV ready for Englands exciting football match against the USA.
We had plenty of Drinks and Food and settled down to a watch what turned out to be a rubbish match.
I know Green made a blunder but the rest of the team had the whole of the second half to win the game. it turned out to be get the ball, kick it up the field and give it to the opposition over and over again, perhaps they are not paid enough.
Otherwise we had a good evening, at about 10.00 Harriet and I walked up to a viewpoint beside the Humber Bridge it was getting darker, the bridge was lit up with the lights shimmering on the water.
Sunday :
In the morning we went for a walk then Harriet and Dean set off for the drive home to Devon.
It was a great weekend and I was so pleased to see them.
I drove down through Immingham past a huge Industrial complex and Docks, this is where the Pilgrim Fathers set sail in 1608 for Holland on the first stage of their journey to America.
Drove through Grimsby stopped at Cleethorpes then a short stop at Mablethorpe to Sutton on Sea where I bought some food from a friendly couple running a Delicatessen finally reaching the campsite beside the beach just before Skegness, Murphy had a great run on a very long beach.
Monday :
A long flat drive past many fields of Vegetable to Boston then on to Kings Lynn and finally to a brilliant campsite on the Sandringham estate ( the Queens Norfolk Retreat), all the Tent, Caravans and Campers where spread out over a large site on grass and woodland, this really felt like camping in the wild.
Simon had a hard ride and arrived at about 6.30 quite tired but after a shower and meal he was fine again.
Tuesday :
Simon has set out this morning towards Cromer.

Hi
A day with a little sadness.
Today is the 1st anniversary of my wife Ann's passing after her long fight with Ovarian Cancer, I have deliberately not mentioned the illness while I have been travelling as I wanted to concentrate on the positive side of the trip and it has been positive with Simon and I having a marvelous time.
I was thinking that maybe today everyone could spare a few minutes to say a prayer not only for those that have already passed away but for all those people who are suffering with Cancer at this moment in whatever form and wish them a speedy recovery.
Also a prayer for all the carers, family and friends who spend a lot of time caring for those who have been struck down with this terrible illness.
I personally have decided to look ahead and enjoy whatever time I have left although the wonderful time I had with Ann will always be with me.
Thursday :
A dry day so I walked Murphy around Marsden Quarry Wildlife Park then along the sea front to the Souter Lighthouse.
I then drove to Sunderland, Hartlepool and through Middlesbrough to our campsite 1 mile before Whitby.
In the evening I took Murphy down to the beach and walked to Whitby, lovely evening and it gave Simon time to do his Meditation.
Friday :
In the morning I drove to Robin Hood Bay, stopped for a while then Scarborough, stopped for lunch drove to Bridlington where I met Harriet (my daughter ) and her husband Dean who drove all the way from Tavistock to be with me on this weekend.
Had a great time looking around and eventually ending up at Atwich near Hornsea in a campsite on a cliff top overlooking the sea.
They pitched the tent then we all walked to the local pub for an evening meal, when we arrived back it was so calm and warm with a brilliant sunset we sat outside until bedtime.

Hello
Have had a problem getting a connection, will see how we get on today.
Saturday :
Simon & I caught the bus into Edinburgh, started by looking for an internet cafe or anywhere with WiFi, eventually we ended up at Starbucks where I left Simon to take things a little easier.
I walked through the park on a very sunny day towards the Castle.
After a long climb I reached the Castle, masses of tourists around, I spent 3 enjoyable hours exploring the Castle and Museums, I then walked down the Royal Mile, with so many people from many countries around it felt very exciting but unfortunately I didn't have time to visit all the places I would have liked to so I have decided I will return at some point and spend a few days at Ediburgh especially as the Campsite was so good.
I returned to the Campsite late afternoon, took Murphy for a walk through the Gardens and woods, sat in the sun reading and resting my feet which over the last 12 weeks have taken quite a pounding.
In the evening after Dinner Simon & I walked to the Pub, had a couple of real ales and had a good chat about the trip.
Sunday :
Left Edinburgh and drove along the coast to North Berwick, Dunbar and stopping for the evening at Coldingham near the lighthouse at St. Abb's Head. As the weather was wet and misty there was not a lot to see.
Monday :
Better day today, after driving to Eyemouth and Berwick upon Tweed I carried on along the coast until I had to make a decision whether to go to Holy Island and Lindisfarne Castle or Bamburgh Castle.
I decided on Bamburgh Castle and I wasn't disappointed as not only was the Castle Stunning but the China , Furniture, Weaponry, Silver and Paintings where a treat to see.
Simon was at the car park when I left the Castle so he stopped for a bite to eat and a cup of tea before cycling off to our next campsite at Craster near Alnwick.
Tuesday :
Down through Amble and Newbiggin by the Sea and Blyth to Whitley Bay where I stopped for a walk on the beach then on through the Tyne Tunnel until I reached Marsden Bay just past South Shields where we stopped for the night.
Great little Bay with a sandy beach, this is the first time I have seen a lift from the top of the cliff to the Cafe/Pub built into the rocks below. There was also a large rock just offshore which is a nesting place for hundreds of birds.
Wednesday :
Simon has gone to Newcastle, I decided I had done enough walking around Shops, Museums etc. and would stay at the Campsite today to do the washing and cleaning + it is pouring with rain.
Good chill out day with no driving.
We are stopping at this same campsite tonight and moving South tomorrow.

Hello

Wednesday :

I visited Peterhead, Aberdeen and Stonehaven arriving at our campsite at Inverbervie about 4.30.

Very clean quiet site on the edge of the bay, I took Murphy for a walk along the bay and then relaxed in the sun reading my book until Simon arrived at about 6.30 after a 97 mile ride.

Thursday :

Drove to Montrose, Arbroath and skirted Dundee, across the Tay Bridge and made my way to St. Andrews.

Nice Town with some great old ruins but one campsite was full and the other didn't want dogs (even little ones) so I went inland to Straithkiness where i found a CL 5 camper site unfortunately no showers or toilets but we managed.

Friday :

I was making my way to Crail so as to keep to the coast when I saw a sign for "Scotlands Secret Bunker" , this sounded interesting so I made a detour to the site and other than a few military vehicles there was only a large Bungalow.

This site was the main Nuclear War Bunker for Scotland used in the 50s & 60s when the threat of a Nuclear war was a real possibility, there was room for maybe 2 or 3 hundred people to live for many weeks if the threat from Russia became a reality.

I went inside, paid my entrance fee, picked up an audio device, went through a door and down a staircase to a long tunnel about 7 ft square which sloped downwards for about 100 yards, the walls were 10 ft thick with steel reinforcing.

At the end where 2 steel doors weighing 3 tons between them, on through to the main coridor with many rooms each side, I visited about 20 rooms they were exactly as they where when the site was fully manned but instead of real people each room had Mannekins ?? dressed in uniforms.

Down another staircase to all the operations rooms, full of Computers and other electronic bits and pieces (looking very dated ) and the room where the top brass would give the order to return fire etc.

In the theatre a b&w film from the 50s was playing giving people instructions on what to do, how to build a shelter etc.

The BBC had a broadcast room being the only place they would broadcast from.

The audio device I carried with me gave a detailed account of each room and the history of the place.

On leaving the site and only seeing a bungalow it was hard to believe that underneath was a mass of rooms including Dining room, Dormitories and a massive power plant.

It got me thinking how many other places are there underground, there could even be a whole town.

Well worth a visit.

I drove along the coast to Crail, Leven, Kirkcaldy and across the Forth road bridge to Mortonhall on the edge of Edinburgh. Lovely site, short grass, lots of trees and good facilities, we are staying here Sat. evening as well.

Simon & I are going into Edinburgh now so I will let you know how we get on in the next blog.

Another sunset this time over Spey Bay

Saturday : Had a new Windscreen fitted by Autoglass, while we were driving around Skye a stone cracked the Windscreen and what started as a small crack started to work it's way across the screen.
Inverness was the only place I new we would be stopping for 3 days so I stuck the screen inside and out with Gaffa Tape until we reached Inverness.
Sunday :
Picked up Simon & Elsie in the Camper and headed down the side of Loch Ness to Fort Augustus where several locks are opened and closed regularly to allow boats to navigate the Caledonian Canal and on into Loch Ness. Spent a couple of hours exploring and then had a pleasant drive up the other side of the Loch.
We didn't see the Monster although someone said there was more chance of seeing the Monster than Britain winning the Eurovision Song Contest.
Simon & Elsie came back to the Campsite to collect Simon's Cycling gear then we took Murphy for a walk along the river bank, They then walked back to their B&B and I went back to the Campsite where I watched "Lewis" and then read my book. Just finished "the girl with the Dragon Tattoo " and I am now reading the second in the Trilogy " The girl who played with Fire" by Stieg Larsson.
Monday :
After the usual chores in the morning I made my way to Fort George at Ardersier, the Fort is on a 42 acre site with more than 1 mile of Ramparts to walk on.
Fort George is still an active military base with soldiers marching and blowing their Bugles.
A superb Military Museum charting the Scottish Regiments through the ages, so many Uniforms Medals, Weapons etc. that it was almost too much to take in.
I then drove to Findhorn Bay where Hamish & Maggie Grigor had offered us a nights stay on their driveway, unfortunately it was only halfway to where we wanted to be so I called in for a very welcome Lunch and a chat then drove to our evening stop at Spey Bay.
Thank you to Hamish & Maggie for making me most welcome, the Lunch, the Donation and the offer of the nights stay.
Got to Spey Bay about 5.30, Simon arrived from a different direction almost at the same time.
We parked on the driveway of Peter & Pat Adamson ( the couple I met at the campsite in Inverness).
Simon had a shower then we all sat down for Dinner, Haddock, Jersey Royals, Fresh Asparagus and various other Vegetables.
At about 7.45 we all got in their New Jaguar and drove to the bay to watch the Osprey diving into the water catching their evening meal, on returning to the Bungalow we had Coffee then Peter brought out the Single Malt and Wine and we spent the evening chatting.
Thank you to Peter & Pat for their hospitality.
Tuesday :
Early start for Simon as he had a 56 mile ride to Fraserburgh for a photo shoot and interview at the Lighthouse Museum and he needed to get their by 2.00 + he had lighthouses to visit on the way.
I visited Portknockie, Portsoy and Rosehearty on my way to Fraserburgh where I spent a couple of hours in the Museum going to the top of the Lighthouse and understanding how Lighthouses were built and worked.
We finished up in a Camping site on the Esplanade at Fraserburgh with views of the Harbour , long curved sandy beach and the Town.
I am off now to see how far Simon can cycle, he is hoping to get below Aberdeen.

Thursday :
Left the campsite which is opposite the Ross County Football Ground and drove through Inverness towards Nairn where I had an appointment to have Murphy clipped and shampooed.
After dropping him off I continued on to Nairn and spent some time at the Harbour and Town centre.
Bought my first pieces of Arbroath Smokey which Simon & I had for our evening meal.
I returned to pick Murphy up and he looked a bit like a skinned Rat.
After getting to our new Campsite back at Inverness I realized just what a bad haircut Murphy had in fact Simon reckoned the lady must have used a Knife & Fork as some bits were short and some long with jagged cuts. ( makes me appreciate Kelly back at Chudleigh). luckily it will soon grow back.
We were camped beside the river Ness which I believe flows to and from Loch Ness.
Took Murphy for a long walk along the rivers edge, across bridges to 2 islands and through some woods.
Friday :
Simon is taking 3 days break as Elsie has flown up to Inverness, Drove to the Airport and picked Elsie up at about 3.30, I then drove them to their B & B in the centre of Inverness.
I continued back to the campsite, took Murphy for a walk down the river, returned and had my evening meal.
I met a couple in the Camper next to mine and joined them for a drink and chat, they had a case of Budweiser so we settled down for a few drinks with cheese & biscuits, I walked back to my camper just after midnight,(had a good nights sleep)
Saturday :
Walked half an hour into Inverness Shopping Centre had a good look around, the weather was turning wet so I walked back to the campsite and it has rained all afternoon and evening.

Tuesday :
Spent the best £3 of the trip by spending 2 hours at the Wick Heritage Museum.
The staff who are volunteers were very friendly explaining a lot of the exhibits.
Room after room set out as the fishing town used to look with a full working lighthouse salvaged after the lighthouse on the headland was being changed to automatic.
Full photo history of the Herring industry plus a cooperage and even fishing boats.
Made my way to a caravan club site at Dalchalm near Brora, very long sandy beach beside a golf course, Murphy had a great time racing up and down the beach.
Wednesday :

Driving towards Inverness I caught site of the pinnacles of a castle through the trees and decided to make my way there, it turned out to be Dunrobin Castle and Gardens, a very large Castle being the home of the Duke of Sutherland.
After I looked around the amazing Castle with lovely Paintings, China, Furniture and cases of Medals, Jewellery, Badges + lots of bits and pieces which would look good in my shop I walked around the Formal Gardens and came across the Museum.
After the initial shock of seeing what seemed to be hundreds of Animal Heads on the walls, I realized that although it is not pc nowadays 100 years ago in was the okay to hunt all these animals and bring back the heads.
I have never seen so many stuffed Animals, Mammals, Birds, Insects, Fish + cases and cases of Weapons, Medals, shells, rocks etc.etc.
I think the museum was as interesting as the main Castle.
That was another 3 hours gone.
Made my way to the next campsite at Dingwall Caravan & Camping Club site.
In the evening I walked into the town with Murphy, had a good look around, walked back along the river to the campsite had supper and we watched an episode of The Royal Family before getting an early night.

Saturday :
Left Sango Sands holiday park Saturday morning and drove along the top of Scotland passing Loch Eriboll, Loch Hope, and Kyle of Tongue and arriving at Bettyhill to see the Strathnaver Museum.
I then drove on to Armadale and Strathy Point Lighthouse eventually stopping for the night at Melvich.
Sunday :
Great ride but nothing very exciting as the mist closed in making this the first day in Scotland where visibility blocked the view.
Arrived at our campsite at Dunnet Bay late afternoon and the mist cleared for a couple of hours giving me time to walk Murphy along the sandy bay.
When Simon arrived at the site he decided to ride out to Dunnet Head Lighthouse but after about 3 miles the weather changed to heavy rain so he turned back and returned to the campsite.
Monday :
Much better weather, sunny but a chilly wind.
Simon had already set off by 9.30, I set off at 11.00 and drove to Dunnet Head Lighthouse, Superb views across to the Orkneys and from the top viewpoint there was a 360 degree unobstructed view.
From there I stopped at "The Castle of Mey" Thurso, Caithness, the holiday home of the Queen Mother.
Just in time for the 1.40 tour, just 3 of us so we were able to have a good look around without being overcrowded.
Very surprised that much of the Queen Mothers posessions were within easy reach and could be touched.
Inside the front door where her Wellington Boots, Coat and Hat which I was able to pick up and examine, beside them was a photo of her wearing them.
The whole tour was fascinating with an insight to how her later life was lived, she loved picnics, playing cards, playing the piano, jigsaws, games and entertaining and buying Furniture and Crafts from the local area.
Princess Margaret often visited her mother at the castle but never spent a night there as she prefered the comfort of the Royal ship Brittania which moored at Scarfskerry.
Prince Charles still spends 1 week every year in the Castle.
The Gardens were a pleasure to walk around in fact Alan Titchmarst has it as his favourite Royal Garden.
This was a busy day as I still had to see John O Groats, the sun was shining brightly when I arrived and I had a good look around taking several Photo's.
Simon rang to say he had reached the next campsite at the town of Wick so I made my way there and met him at Tesco's car park, we did a shop and went to the campsite, had supper and settled down for the evening.
We are now on the downward stretch and Simon has to cycle on the busy main roads tomorrow.

Simon visited the lighthouse on Friday afternoon, lucky for him as on Saturday the Cape Wrath Marathon took place and there would have been no way he could have got the ferry across.

Tuesday :
I think I have heard more Cuckoo's in Scotland than anywhere else I have visited.
Drove up to Port Nis at the top of Lewis, spent an hour there, sat and had a pot of tea and an Omlette at the cafe overlooking the Harbour.
Made my way to the lighthouse at the Butt of Lewis, lovely warm sunny day, amazing lighthouse built of brick(will upload a photo when I get a decent connection), spent another hour walking along the clifftops.
The west side of Lewis seems to be more dramatic so I decided to drive around the whole island stopping to look around a Crofters Village which is being restored by one of the Heritage Trusts (can't remember which one) I think the village was called Blackhouse.
Saw the Callanish Standing Stones then drove back to Stornaway for the evening.
Wednesday :
Stayed at the campsite till 11.30 then made my way to the Ferry Terminal, did a shop on the way and caught the 1.50 ferry to Ullapool arriving at about 4.30, made our way to the very clean & level campsite with views of the mountains & Loch it was about 200 yards from the Harbour.
Lovely little town with good shops and Pubs and the sunset from the campsite had all the campers out taking photo's, it was still light at 10.45 when I took Murphy for a walk along the shoreline.
Thursday :
This morning I am meeting Simon somewhere near Unapool so we can decide how far he can cycle as the lighthouse he has to visit today is we think a difficult ride.

Hi everyone
Saturday :
The boys cycled from the campsite at the Sligachan Hotel to Kyle of Lochalsh were we found an excellent campsite, lovely views of the Loch and Mountains, clean site with trees dotted around, lots of grass, the whole site giving a feel of calm.(definately in the top 3).
We relaxed in the late afternoon and early evening, took Murphy for a long walk then we made our way to the Hotel about 50 yds away, had a 3 course meal and a couple of drinks because it was Ruperts last evening with us.(any excuse).
Simon (cycling )& me (driving)were going to make our way to Ullapool after we had dropped Rupert off at the railway station at Kyle of Lochalsh but while we were talking in the Hotel Bar the idea of visiting the Outer Hebrides cropped up.
Sunday :
When we woke in the morning I asked Simon if he would still like to go to the Isles of Harris & Lewis.
An immediate "Yes" a phone call to the ferry company, phonecall to a campsite at Uig and after dropping Rupert off at the station we were on our way back up through Skye to Uig camping beside the Ferry terminal.
Had a very early night as the ferry left at 5.30 am.
Monday :
Up at 4.15 am, at the Ferry Terminal by 4.50, on the Ferry by 5.00 setting sail at 5.30 from Uig and arriving at Tarbert on the Isle of Harris at 7.10.
Simon met another cyclist (Damian) a couple of days earlier, they met again on the Ferry and decided to ride together to Stornaway.
Murphy and I turned left and made our way around the whole coast of Harris, amazing and so different from anywhere else we have been, Sandy coves, rugged rocks and narrow roads with very few cars made for a great journey with Murphy racing up and down the beaches and getting tired out.
Made my way up through Lewis to our campsite at Stornaway.
The scenery at Lewis was good but not amazing( maybe I am getting used to seeing water and rocks) but was still well worth the effort of changing our plans and getting up early.
Simon & Damian arrived at the campsite a t4.30 pm and we are sat in the sun drinking a cup of tea.

Hello again
Tuesday evening :
The boys arrived around 5.30 and were blown away by the site, quite basic but the location was amazing, best site we have been to.
Rupert decided he would sleep in the tent giving him more room to stretch out.
Wednesday :
Drove to Mallaig and caught the ferry to Armadale on the Isle of Skye, great drive around the island to our campsite at the Sligachan Hotel.
Rupert again pitched his tent had a good meal and went to the Hotel for the evening.
The Ale was brewed next door being owned by the same owner as the Hotel & campsite (very smooth Ale).
There was also over 300 single malt Whiskey's on display so we tried a 30 year old ( not being an expert it was hard to tell the difference) but still enjoyable.
In the night it rained hard & the wind blew, then it rained harder & the wind blew harder, then the rain hammered down and the wind was storm force shaking the camper but all was well.
Thursday :
We had a day off, when the rain stopped we drove to Talisker Distillery for a tour, got there too early so we went for lunch at the old inn Talisker.
I had slow roasted Beef Cheeks(first time for everything) with mashed potato and creamed cabbage, it was very tasty and filling.
Went for a very informative tour, had a sample and then made our way back to the campsite were we settled down for the evening, getting a fairly early night.
Friday :
After the usual chores of washing the dishes and tidying up I drove to Dunvegan Castle & Gardens passing Simon & Rupert on the way, the Castle was just past the town of Dunvegan.
The castle is the stronghold of the MacLeod family and the family still live there.
Stayed about 2 hours then made my way to the town to wait for the boys.
Had lunch and then visited the Giant Angus MacAskill Museum dedicated to the tallest recorded Scotsman at 7ft 9in - weight 425lbs which contained a life size model of Angus MacAskill.
As Simon had visited the lighthouse on Skye we put the bikes into the Camper and I took them around the top of the island to see the parts we had not planned to see (well worth the effort ) arriving at the campsite at Portree at 6.30
Set up the camper, had supper and wrote this blog.

Hi everyone
Sunday:
Drove to Oban, the days are passing so quickly I am having trouble remembering what I did each day(or it could be age).
Had a great ride through the mountains again and arrived at Oban to find Simon & Rupert were already there sitting on the front in the sun.
Found a Car Park where there was enough room for the Camper and walked with Murphy to the town centre.
Met up with the boys and spent a couple of hours in the town visiting the Coliseum and looking around the shops.
We made our way to the Oban Caravan & Camping site, lovely site, friendly staff and great views.
The owner returned our fee's to add to the charity collection, So Thank you very much.
Monday :

Filled up with fuel, did a shop and made my way to the Ferry Terminal.
Superb ferry crossing to Craignure on the island of Mull, drove around the island to Tobermory, had an hour wait for the next ferry so had freshly cooked Haddock & Chips in the Camper.
Caught the ferry to Kilchoan and camped at the end of a narrow lane on the Ardnamurchan peninsula overlooking a Loch, clean small site with lovely views and friendly owner.
Tuesday :
Gradually getting more remote, narrow roads and more stunning, loving it.
Have made my way to the Invercaimbe camping site, managed to get one of the best pitches almost touching the beach, amazing views across to the isles of Rum, Skye and Eigg, waiting for the boys to arrive.

Morning everyone
Started our ninth week today, about halfway and still loving it.
Thursday :
Simon & Daniel cycled to the lighthouse at the Mull of Kintyre, very steep pathway, took about 3 hours, then made our way to Campbletown for lunch and fuel.
Daniel & I drove to our next campsite on the waters edge again at Muasdale, lovely quiet site with a long stretch of beach for Murphy's exercise.
Friday :
Made our way to Lochgilphead, the scenery is gradually getting more stunning.
Daniel & I spent a couple of hours in the town waiting for Simon to arrive.
Simon had 2 broken spokes and was lucky to find a bike repair shop in the town.
The bike was put in the camper and I drove us all to a campsite at Balloch on the bottom edge of Loch Lomond.
This ride was the best scenery of the trip so far, Mountains with snow and deep valley's + the Loch's.
Saturday :
Took Daniel to Glasgow airport for hs flight home, Simon caught the bus to Glasgow and i drove back to Loch Lomond to the visitors centre were I spent about 3 hours looking around the Shops, took a train ride, and took Murphy for a walk along the waters edge.
In the afternoon I drove to Glasgow airport again to pick up Simon & Rupert Watson-Smythe.
Rupert flew up from Cornwall and is cycling with Simon for about 9 days through the Islands.
I then had to drive all of us back to Lochgilphead( about 60 miles) to the place where Simon last stopped cycling so that he would not miss any parts out.
Had a great meal in a local restaurant in the evening, did a late food shop and walked back to the campsite.
A quarter to ten and still light, very warm and the lights from the houses flickering on the Loch made all three of us feel very lucky to be here.
Sunday :
Simon & Rupert left for Oban at 9.30, I am leaving now to find the next campsite.

Hello once again
No signal since Monday, not bad at the moment.
Tuesday :
I drove to Glasgow Airport in the morning, much further than I thought, my plan was to take the coast road but instead I had to use the Motorway.
Picked Daniel up at about 10.00 am and drove to the ferry port of Ardrossan, I had prebooked our Hopscotch ticket for 2 ferries so we met Simon who missed his 9.15 ferry ( he did not realize how far Ardrossan was as the map changed from 3 miles to 6 miles,) for a breakfast in Asda.
The 55 minute ferry trip to Brodick was great, we stood on deck and watched the mainland shrink in the distance as we approached the Isle of Arran.
Simon rode off on his Bike leaving Daniel & I the hard bit of riding in the camper, we stopped at many places to admire the scenery.
We did not see Simon again until we had driven to the Lochranza Caravan & Camping site in Lochranza Tel. 01770 830273, Lovely campsite run by Kathy & Nigel Wells who took over in February, they are working hard but loving it.
A big thank you for the help with the nights stay.
The views around Lochranza are superb with deer roaming free, Eagles flying above and massive Gorse covered hills all around.
In the evening the 3 of us walked to the local Hotel for a well earned Meal & a couple of pints of local ale, the walk back to the campsite was warm, dark and silent except for the calls of some birds on the water.
Wednesday:
After Simon left to catch the ferry from Lochranza to Claonaig on the Mull of Kintyre Daniel & I went for a walk in the hills until we were in a valley surrounded by hills and nothing else. (very peaceful).
The campsite was opposite the Arran Distillery so that was next on our itinery with a tour just about to start as we arrived.
Very interesting tour by our guide Campbell who informed us that this is the only independant Distillery left in Scotland with the water coming from the loch high up in the hills.
At the end of the tour we were forced to sample the different whiskeys and the cream liqueur.
We made our way to the ferry and crossed to Claonaig driving south to Campbeltown stopping for fuel and provisions.
We then made our way to our next stop The Machribeg Caravan Site, Machribeg, Southend near Campbeltown Tel. 01586 830249 where we were given a free nights stay about 20 foot from the sea overlooking the bay.
The sea is so calm and the weather so warm it feels great with Murphy having the whole beach to race up and down on.

Hi everyone
Saturday :
Walked murphy on the coast path for one more look at the fantastic view towards Belfast, I then drove to Stranraer, parked in Morrisons car park, did a shop, filled up with fuel and took a walk around the town where I had a much needed haircut.
Drove along the A77 which hugged the coast most of the way to Girvan (wonderful scenery) passing Ballantrae and Lendafoot on the way.
Got a call from Simon to say the A77 was a bit dangerous to ride on as there is very little room for cyclist so he was taking a detour inland making for Barrhill and could I get a nights stay in the Barrhill area.
I managed to get us a nights stay at Barrhill Holiday Park , Barrhill, Girvan, Ayrshire Tel. 01465 821355
Thank you to the management for their generous free nights stay.
After Simon had showered and had his evening meal we watched a movie.
Sunday :
I left Barrhill and made my first stop at Girvan giving Murphy a good walk along the coast and park.
Made my way along the coast road to Ayr, booked into Craigie Gardens Caravan Club site and waited for Simon who arrived mid afternoon giving us time to spend a couple of hours in the Town centre and walk along the Promenade.
Monday:
Gave the Camper a Spring clean as Daniel is flying up from Brighton to spend 4 days with us, (three sleeping in the Camper + Murphy).
Spent the afternoon in Ayr town centre and the long sandy beach where the whole area was bustling with holiday makers making the most of the sunshine especially as this was the last day of the holiday weekend.
Walked to the Harbour were a large Cargo Ship was being brought in by the local Pilot making docking the ship look easy, walk up the side of the river/canal and back to the campsite where I settled down to watch the Snooker.
Tomorrow I am taking the Camper on the ferry to the Isle of Arran after I pick Daniel up from Glasgow Airport.
Howard let me know if you have dropped the parcel to Colin?

Hi everyone
Wednesday :
Left Auchencairn at mid day, first stop with my new Historic Scotland pass was Dundrennan Abbey were Mary Queen of Scots spent her last night in Scotland in 1568.
Ruined Abbey, very well kept and well worth the visit.
Long ride for Simon along a very fast A75 road with no cycle routes anywhere.
I took a longer route to Wigtown (town of books) then across to Port William and up the coast of Luce Bay to our next site at Glenluce.
Thanks to Irene Rankin of Glenluce Holiday Park, Glenluce, Wigtownshire, DG8 0QR Tel. 01581 300412 for not only giving us a free nights stay but also for being very friendly and helpful, lovely quiet site with a babbling brook running along the edge.
Thursday :
Drove from Glenluce for the short drive past Stranraer to our next site at Galloway Point Holiday Park, Portpatrick 01776 810561 where we were fortunate enough to get a two day stay for half price (Thank you very much ) also one of the best toilet blocks we have had with piped music, very clean and very warm.
In the afternoon I walked Murphy through the Caravan Park to the coastal path leading to Portpatrick, what a view, Isle of Man to the left and Ireland to the right , beautiful calm sea with the sun reflecting off it.
Came across a ruined Castle right on the edge of the cliff and a disused railway line cut through the rocks, the cliff face is covered in Gorse in full colour a mass of Yellow.
We made our way over wooden bridges and down what must have been a hundred steps to the harbour.
Walked around the bay, stopped for an ice cream and a cup of tea before returning back up the steps and along the coastal path to the campsite.
Simon arrived had a shower, Dinner and settled down for a quiet evening.
Friday :
Spent the morning tidying the Camper, washing & drying 2 machine loads of washing and taking Murphy for a walk.
Simon & I made our way along the coastal path to Portpatrick, sat in the sun, had a good look around, had some superb Haddock & chips + cup of tea, did some shopping and made our way back to the campsite in the afternoon.
Lazy evening watching the snooker and finishing this blog.

Hi all

Stopped at St. Bee's Sunday night, Monday morning Simon asked me to look out for Nat who is walking the coast of Britain starting at Portsmouth and finishing in December.
Sure enough as I was preparing to leave along came this man with a rucksack on his back, taking a chance I asked if he was Nat, It was so I took a photo, had a chat and he was on his way again.
Made my way towards Carlisle, made a few stops on the way reaching our campsite near Carlisle by 5.00.
Simon arrived at about 6.00 had a shower had dinner and watched a couple of episodes of The Office.
Tuesday:
Arrived in Gretna, Scotland then drove along the coast stopping at Caerlaverock Castle, decided to join Historic Scotland as there are many places to visit while I am here.
Great old ruined Castle with a moat also dog friendly so Murphy had a good run around.
Arrived at our destination about about 4.00

Well worth a stop if you are in the area.
Lovely cottage, bright and airy with wifi so I am able to do this blog fairly quickly.
Last evening Simon was asked to do a talk on his trip to a Rotary Club at Kirkcudbright.
Jim took us both as he is a member of Rotary in a neighbouring town(Simon will tell you more on his blog).
After drinks bought by one of the members we sat down to an evening meal paid for by Jim.
Various talks and presentations then Simon gave his talk which went down very well.
Back at the cottage Jim fetched a bottle of Single Malt Whiskey and we sat down for a good chat.
Among other things Jim writes Apps for the iphone so I have downloaded a couple .

Thank you to the Owners of the site for a half price nights stay.
Stayed on the Isle of Walney Friday night until Sunday morning, did a few repairs in the camper + a good tidy up and a relaxing Saturday, plenty of walks + I did my first bike ride in years ( bit wobbly but soon got the hang of it) I think Simon struggled to keep up with me.
Could have done with a cushion on the leather seat but very enjoyable. in the evening we went to the clubhouse for a couple of drinks, in bed by 11.00.
I drove from Walney through Barrow towards St. Bee's stopping at Muncaster Castle & Gardens for a couple of hours, the Rhodedendrons ? and Azelias ? were in full bloom with masses of dafodils still in flower.
Interesting Castle and bird demonstration.
I have spent a lot of time on this trip looking for and buying stock for when I return , Secondhand/collectable shops, Antique shops, Markets & a couple of Boot sales, getting quite a collection with a lot sent home with my daughter last weekend.

Wednesday late afternoon :
Took Murphy for a walk towards Ainsdale, after just over a mile saw some high dunes with a walkway through them, thinking it would lead to the sea we altered course and headed up then down then up then down soon realizing I had gone a too far to turn back.
Finally after what seemed ages and Murphy panting for a drink we arrived at Ainsdale beside Pontin's Holiday camp.
Found a tap on the wall , gave Murphy a long drink then back to the campsite, in all two & a quarter hours walking.
In the evening I drove into Liverpool City Centre for a look around. That was Wednesday over.
Thursday :
Bypassed Southport as I went there Wednesday, went to Preston, Stopped at Lytham St. Anne's then on to Blackpool.
Blackpool was worth seeing but when I pulled in on the promenade to have a good look around I was moved on by a Warden as Motorhomes are banned from the sea front with a £35 fine.
So no Harry Ramsdens Fish & Chips from Blackpool but on reflection did I want all that food cooked in animal fat .
Onto Fleetwood + all the towns to Lancaster finally reaching our destination The Sands Public House and Campsite. We treated ourselves to an evening meal which I will not say much about otherwise you may think all we do is eat and drink. ( The Gammon Ham was the best I have tasted in Months).
Friday :
Drove through Morcambe to Carnforth around to Ulverston then Barrow-in-Furness keeping to the coast road, amazed at how big Morcambe Bay is.
Finally reaching our destination ( get your map out or Google earth) the southern tip of The Isle of Walney, which is somewhere I had never heard of, more of this place in my next blog.

Hi again
Tuesday :
Left Eccleston Tuesday morning and made my way towards Southport , did a shop and refuelled at Tesco's.
Arrived at Formby and stopped at the Sefton Natural Coast which is owned by the National Trust.
There are walks through the Pine Woodland where red squirrels live although I didn't spot any, further down is the coast with very high sand dunes.
Murphy & I walked up the dunes, when we reached the top there were more & more dunes I felt I was in the Sahara.(just kidding).
We then drove closer to Southport and came across a lovely campsite, very level, lots of hardstandings, very clean with a very clean toilet & shower block & quiet with a large area for exercising dogs.
We were made very welcome at the Willowbank Holiday Park, Coastal Road, Ainsdale, Southport, PP8 3ST Tel. 01704 571566.
I can really recommend this campsite if you are in this area.
A big thank you to the management for their generous 2 days for the price of 1.
Wednesday morning:
Took Murphy for his usual walk through the woods then I caught the bus into Southport, spent about 3 hours in the town and along the Prom walking right to the end of the Pier, I don't know how long it was but there is a Tram which travels the full length.
From the end of the Pier I could see Blackpool Tower and Lytham St. Annes although they were 4 miles away.
The tide was so far out that I couldn't see the sea but the tide comes in very fast.
Back at the site now reading my book in the sun.

Hi Everyone
Saturday evening:
Harriet, Dean & I went to the Moby Dick public house for a well deserved carvery after the busy day in Liverpool (must say extremely good value for money).
Sunday :
Harriett & Dean left the campsite about 10.00 am as they had a 6 hour drive back to Devon.
I had a lazy day in the sun , cleaned the inside of the camper, that was Sunday.
Monday :
Left the campsite about 11.00 am, went to Bromborough and bought a little TV as I miss the News and Sport especially the football, haven't got a signal yet as the ariel in the camper is not very good so wil get that sorted soon.
Parked in the farmyard of Ailsa & Bernard Stockley at Howards Farm Eccleston, took Murphy for a long walk around the country lanes, in the evening I had a roast dinner with Ailsa & Bernard, watched my first tv in 5 weeks and had a good chat before retiring for the night.

Thursday evening :
Simon and I were invited to the Cromwells Restaurant at 19 Thingwall Road, Irby Village, Wirral, CH61 3UA | 0151 648 9898 by the owners Kay Featherstone and Kate Allinson as a treat on them.
We started with a large platter of Wedges, Deep fried Mushrooms, Bread & Butter, Onion rings,dips etc.
Followed by Sirloin Steak, Chips, New Potato's, Port & Stilton melt & various fresh Vegetables.
For sweet we had Cheshire Ice Cream .
Two bottles of Lager each then a cup of Coffee to finish the evening off all with the compliments of the management so a huge thank you to you both.
Simon has also been put onto their website and also twitter.
We stayed until 11.00 getting back to the campsite by taxi at 11.30 which is the latest we have stayed up since we started.
Friday :
Moved from the Wirral Country Park to another campsite for 3 nights.
Simon went to Liverpool to have the weekend with his girlfriend Elsie who drove up from Dartmouth.
Harriett & Dean drove up to stay with me on the campsite for the weekend.
We went for a long walk in the Wirral Country Park + along the edge of the River Dee.
Spent a lot of time lazing in the sun then walked to a local pub for an evening meal.
It was dark when we got back so off to bed we went.
Saturday:
Spent the whole day in Liverpool, very impressed, clean & tidy with so much to see especially the Docks and museums and all the old buildings, in reality at least a week is needed to see it all.
We are now sitting in the sun discussing where to go this evening.

Hi again
The connection is still painfully slow but I will put what I can.
Tuesday:
left the campsite and stopped at the Ellesmere Port Boat Museum.
Took Murphy with me as I wandered around the Barges and canals, went aboard some and saw the exhibition of Diesel engines.
Very interesting old cottages furnished as they would have been in the 50's.
Made our way up the Wirral and stopped at a campsite in Thurstaston, had an easy evening and watched a film.
Wednesday :
Had a day off, did a shop at Tesco's then drove to our next site about 2 miles from our last site, Wirral Country Park Caravan Club Site very near the coast.
Took Murphy for a long walk through the Wirral Country Park down to the edge of the river Dee.
Superb weather , long beach at the mouth of the Dee with views across to Wales with Flint immediately opposite.
Had a lazy evening sitting in the late sun, Simon took a photo of a brilliant Sunset which he hopes to put on his blog when we get a good connection.
Thursday :
Stayed at the same site today, Simon cycled to the lighthouses on the Wirral, I took Murphy for a long hike through the country park but in a different direction along the clifftop eventually finding a set of steps leading down to the estuary,Murphy went mad racing around on the sand.
Walked what seemed miles until we came across another set of steps which took us up to the Information centre, sat on a seat in the sun and was awoken half an hour later by my phone ringing.
This evening we have been invited to a Restaurant for a meal ( will let you know how we get on tomorrow).

Hi All
Firstly thanks to the proprietor of Dinarth Hall campsite for giving us a free stay for the night.
Sunday:
Made my way from Llandudno along the coast stopping to give Murphy a long run on the beach at Rhyl. (never seen so many static caravans), brilliant sunshine.
Second stop was Prestatyn then down to Flint finally arriving at our next campsite : Chester Fairoaks a Caravan Club Site where we were made most welcome and without asking the offer of 2 nights stay free of charge so a big THANK YOU.
I must say that the people we have met so far have been extremely kind and helpful.
Had a day off Monday as Simon's bike is desperate for a service, it is booked in for Tuesday morning.
We went to Chester City, had a great time, town full of people all looking happy in the sunshine.
If you are ever in the area Chester is well worth a visit as it is one of the nicest shopping centres I have ever visited, so much to see , didn't get time to visit the museum or castle (will come back one day).
Our whole day was spent in Chester and on returning to our campsite we were both feeling a little hungry and what should be parked beside our camper was a mobile fish & chips shop.
It was there for 2 hours and we resisted for most of that time but in the end we gave in and bought some ( very tasty ).
Tuesday morning:
Simon has gone to have his bike serviced and I have still not got a place to stop tonight.

Hi Everyone
Saturday:
After taking Murphy for a long walk down some country lanes Simon & I caught the bus to Llandudno.
The town was bustling even more than Fridays visit, everything was open with crowds of people enjoying the warmth of the sun.
We split up as Simon was drawn to book shops where as I just wanted to have a good look around at everything.
Found an old Music Hall (with original plasterwork, Balcony with seats and curved boxes high up on each side) taken over by Wetherspoons.
Happened to walk in as a beer festival was in full swing, had a couple of pints of real ale at 90p per pint.
Walked along the prom and heard the unmistakable sound of a Punch & Judy (the children seemed to love it but the voices were a bit to much for me so I carried on walking soaking up the sun & fresh air).
I saw 2 cyclist 1 male 1 female with all their panniers attached to their bikes stopped just in front of me, I asked them were they were going " on a 2 week ride to get used to our bikes before we go on a 2 year round the world trip".
I phoned Simon who came across and had a long talk with them both, they were exchanging hints & tips.
Simon & I went to Wetherspoons for a late lunch and returned to the campsite about 6.o clock , took Murphy for a walk and planned our next days journey.

Hi all
Thursday :
Had a full Welsh Breakfast before setting off from Holy Island to Anglesey.
Made my way around the coast calling in at Cemaes, Amlwch and Benllech before stopping at Beaumaris for 4 hours.
Walked the promenade with Murphy, had a good look around the town but no entry to the Castle for dogs.
Took Murphy back to the camper and spent an hour or so looking around the ruined castle before meeting up with Simon for a pot of tea.
I made my way to a campsite in Bangor in a walled garden, only 1 other couple there so very peaceful.
Friday:
Left Bangor, the sun was shining and the snow on the mountains was sparkling.
Stopped at Rhos-on-sea, Murphy had a great time racing up and down the sandy beach (got him tired out ).
Our final destination for today was at a campsite between Rhos-on-Sea and Llandudno parked on a level grass field with about 18 other campers & caravans.
I caught the bus into Llandudno and was pleasantly surprised by the long sweeping bay and very long pier, the whole place was buzzing with tourists with all the sounds and smells of a busy seaside town.
Simon is having a day of rest tomorrow so we are both going back to Llandudno in the morning.

Tuesday evening:
The weather cleared and after our evening meal I took Murphy for a long walk into Caernarfon, I walked to the castle, it was getting dark and all the lights around the base made it look magical.
I decided I had to see it in daylight so when Simon started his ride to Holyhead at 9.00 I walked to the Castle and spent a good 2 hours exploring all the passages, rooms, ramparts and turrets.
The highlight for me was the museum of the Welsh Fusiliers, charting their history from the beginning to the present day.
The display was on three levels with cases of Medals, Pictures, Uniforms, Weapons and displays with atmospheric sound effects and music.
Back at the campsite I packed everything up and slowly drove across the wet grass (no problems).
Did a shop at Tesco's, refuelled and made my way to Holyhead, Anglesey, had a look around the town and waterfront.
Met Simon who still had the South Stack lighthouse to visit.
I managed to get a lovely campsite overlooking the water not far from the South Stack lighthouse called Blackthorn Farm near Holyhead.
Just watched a stunning sunset now it is time to settle down with my book before Murphy needs to go out again.

Hi again
Left Aberystwyth Monday Morning and headed for Barmouth, wonderful drive through the mountains.
Stopped for lunch beside the river with mountains all around ( very peaceful)
Arrived in Barmouth mid afternoon, stopped at the Hendre Mynach Caravan Park, 20 minutes walk to Barmouth along the sea front.
After a long walk with Murphy we settled down for the evening, just finished the book Mortal Engines and have just started The Davinci Code.
Tuesday :
Saw Harlech Castle from the road but no where to park so made my way to Portmeirion village, Where "The Prisoner " with Patrick McGoohan was filmed in the 60's.
The village still looks the same as when the TV series was filmed, spent about 3 hours there.
Had a phone call from Simon to say he had reached Caernarfon and it had started raining so I booked a campsite, met him there and he has now gone for a shower.
Had to park on grass and the ground is very wet so it will be interesting in the morning when I drive off the field.

Hi All
Camped at Aberystwyth Holiday Village for the weekend, gave the camper a spring clean & tidy up.
Simon cycled from Cardigan to Aberystwyth on Saturday after a puncture and brake failure arriving about 5.o clock, after he showered & changed we made our way down to the town center.
Very impressed, lovely old buildings, Remains of a castle, University and the old college also a long promenade and beach.
Had a good look around and took several photo's before making our way to an Indian Restaurant for a well deserved meal.
Sunday :
After an extra couple of hours in bed we had breakfast and I took Murphy down to the town as I wanted to go up to Constitution Hill on the Aberystwyth Cliff Railway. The longest electric cliff railway in Britain, Superb Views along the coastline to the mountains of Snowdonia.
Lazy evening charting our next 4 campsites.
This evening Simon has a radio interview on Radio Devon and maybe Radio Bristol.
Thank you to the Management of the Aberystwyth Holiday Village for their reduced site fees for the three days.

Hi all
Better day today just a few squally showers although when I meet up with Simon he will tell me how bad it is out there, I am protected from the elements by the Camper.
My first stop was a large Norman Castle partly ruined, Murphy and I had a great time exploring, only hindered by the rain & wind.
On to St Davids stopping to take in the sites on the way passing some lovely villages and Bays.
Great site at Caerfai Bay Caravan & Tent Park St. Davids, we were given a pitch on the headland with a view over the whole bay with the compliments of the Owners (thank you very much). tel.01437 720274 if you would like a nice site with magnificent views.
Thursday evening:
We had sunshine when Simon arrived Thursday evening so While I took Murphy for a run on the beach Simon showered & changed, we then walked into St Davids (smallest city in Britain I think), lovely Cathedral also the ruins of an older Building maybe Cathedral or Church, it was closed when we got there.
Friday :
Today I have made my way to Cardigan, stopping to lunch in a lay by overlooking Fishguard (what a view) Watched the Stena Line Ferry come in then took Murphy for a walk on the coastal footpath stopping at the old fort with 4 cannons pointing out to sea.
I am now waiting for Simon to reach me before we decide were to camp for the night.

Hi all
Simon decided not to ride on Wednesday because of the rain but also the very high winds and the cold.
It cleared towards lunchtime so we drove to Tenby and spent a few hours in the old walled town.
We returned to Trefalun Park and enjoyed a second free nights camping ( thanks Viv & Jacky James), had a relaxing evening ( I am starting to realize that I can take it easy once I have hooked up at the next campsite).
Simon set off early 8.15 on Thursday morning, he has lighthouses to visit and will meet me somewhere near St Davids when I find a campsite which is not waterlogged.

Hi everyone
March is nearly gone so hope the weather improves.
Stayed at a Caravan Club site last night at Gowerton near Swansea, very clean & tidy, staff very friendly.
Spent most of the afternoon in the camper as it was blowing a gale, gave me time to read my book The Skeleton Room by Kate Ellis( detective novel set around Newton Abbot and the South Coast).
Simon arrived cheerful but wet.
After a shower we took a cab to a local village and had a carvery,Turkey, Beef, Gammon and Sausages in Jack Daniels + roast potatoes, Yorkshire Pudding, lots of steamed veg and thick gravy.
Both felt very full after that.
Today made my way to Tenby, great shame it is still pouring as I particularly wanted to visit the town.
It is now 4.30 pm waiting for Simon at a very nice Campsite called Trefalun Park run by Viv & Jacky James who gave Murphy & me a warm welcome with no Charge for the nights stay ( Thank you very much)

Hi everyone
10.00 am Monday morning, Simon has set off in the pouring rain first visiting Porthcawl then onto Gowerton.
Friday evening took Murphy for a long walk around the lake (about the size of stover lake) and then around the grounds of Tredegar House, Had Dinner then we watched 3 episodes of The Office, had a good nights sleep in the knowledge that we were having a day of rest on Saturday.
Saturday :
Simon and I spent the day in Cardiff, Great city,Sunny & dry all day, went by bus, did some shopping then visited the Museum for 2 - 3 hours still only seeing a portion of the museum but saw the China and Porcelain collection and the Art collection (wonderful paintings).
Sunday :
Dry all day, drove to Porthcawl, found campsite, took Murphy down to Pothcawl Harbour (about 2 miles or so it seemed).
Lovely bay, lots of people but many parts of the front looked tatty, with rusty ironwork, rotten wood and paint peeling off giving the impression of no one having any pride in the place.
Funfair, Burger vans Stalls selling Holiday bits & pieces, Made me realize how nice Devon & Cornwall resorts are. I still enjoyed the experience.
Will write again this evening when I get to Gowerton(Camping Club Site)

Hi again
Camped at the Cranmoor Campsite near Clevedon Thursday evening, only ones there again.
Small site run by Alice who gave us a reduced rent ( thank you).
Went to bed early as we were miles from anywhere, had a good sleep then made our way to Wales.
Simon had to get his brakes fixed, great bike but he is giving it some hammering.

We were making for Barry but after getting the bike repaired and having to get across the river Avon and over the new bridge across the Severn we have camped at Tredegar House Country Park near Newport, our first Caravan Club Site, very clean and tidy with plenty of room and fellow campers but it is pouring again, Simon hasn't arrived yet but he is close.

Hi everyone, Wednesday morning Simon left Lynton early after a good nights sleep heading for a lighthouse down a steep path then having to cycle back up.
I left Lynton about 2 hours later the hills out were extremely steep, when I got to the top of a particularly steep hill I stopped at a large car park for a cup of tea, after about half an hour I saw in the distance a lone cyclist with a yellow coat battling the elements, the only person mad enough to be out in this weather had to be Simon who was thankful for a drink and a ham sandwich before carrying on towards Minehead to get his bike repaired.
I made my way to Dunster Castle and spent a few hours there looking around the house, gardens and village which i really enjoyed ( would have liked some of those antiques from the house in my shop) .
Made my way to Watchet where I was welcomed by Ron & Kathy Jones who made available their driveway for the camper.
Straight in for a cup of tea and a long chat, when Simon arrived he had a shower in the house and later we all sat down to an evening meal. went down to the town with murphy for a look around and decided i would return in the morning for a good look around.
Thursday Morning
Went down to Watchet harbour and was very fortunate to see THE BLACK PRINCE Steam Engine stop at the station to pick up passengers I then filmed it pull out of the Station.
Did some shopping were I bought some stock for my shop, When I got back to the House Kathy had washed and dried 2 loads of washing for us and gave us a box of home made cakes.
Ron helped me fill up with water unhitched the electric hookup and Murphy and I were on our way.

Hi everyone, very short this morning as the internet connection is very bad. not a lot of news except rain, rain, rain.
camped at Stoke Barton farm campsite, stoke, Hartland, Bideford, Helen & Colin Davey were very helpful giving us a free nights camping, Colin also offered to take us to Hartland Quay so we could buy a meal and then pick us up afterwards but Simon arrived so wet, tired and cold that we went to bed at 9.00, had a good nights sleep.
Tuesday was very similar to Monday, Simon had his worse day yet saying it was probably as bad as he had ever experienced even when he rode through India on a motorbike, he started at 9.00 and arrived at Lynton at 6.30, falling off once and banging his arm.
I went to Atlantic village to do some shopping and then made my way to the campsite in Lynton.
We han a taxi into Lynton in the evening and had a couple of drinks,I had Bangers & Mash, Simon had lasagne.
Simon has set off for a shorter ride today, he has an hours trip to a lighthouse then a 25+ miles ride to Watchet, Somerset were we will stop for the night.
Just because the weather is bad do not think we are not enjoying our trip, we are both savouring the experience knowing that better times are ahead.
p.s. Murphy has settled in so well , sleeps right through the night and enjoys the walks.

Hi everyone
Into our second week, Simon has left Padstow making for Hartland Point, it is pouring with rain and blowing a gale.
I am sat in Ruperts Kitchen beside the AGA drinking tea. 10.30 am
We stayed at Rupert Watson Smythes Farmhouse Sat. & Sun overlooking Tregirls beach, Padstow.
Sunday was Superb weather walked Murphy over the headland to the Blow Hole, then walked on the beach.
Sunday evening 6 of us went to Wadebridge, Had an Indian then went to the Cinema, watched a french film with subtitles called "The Prophet" about life in a French Prison, It won an award at the Cannes film festival, we all enjoyed it.
A big thank you to Rupert & his brother Mathew for their hospitality also the Sunday morning Fryup.
Rupert is joining Simon on the ride for 10 days in Scotland.

Saturday Morning 20th March

Hi everyone
Well I am an OAP now 65 yesterday but feeling pretty fit and healthy.
We had a nice meal in St ives Thursday evening, Couple of pints of Doombar which is brewed in Cornwall then a nice walk back through the cobbled streets to our campsite.
Simon had a dry start Friday, St ives looked stunning from our site, didn't last long it poured all day .
Thank you to the lady who ran up with a donation as I left the site.
Made my way to St Agnes and was looking around an Antique/ collectable shop talking to Jane Templeman ( also a cancer sufferer) of Yester-year Antiques who gave a donation, thank you very much, at 12.00 met Simon who was joined by Russ Abbot (sorry I mean Mathew Watson Smythe) who rode for the last 32 miles to Padstow.
As I parked up an elderly gent came up with " You can't park a camper here this is for cars only, there are too many of you Hippies parking overnight using our facilities )" I replied " Do I look like your average hippy take a look at the sign on the van" .
"Sorry didn't realize what you were doing" he then went on his way.
Later as we were walking down the street the same man came up to Mathew and said "You look like Russ Abbot", "well you look like Benny Hill "said Mathew
He turned his cap sideways, pulled his glasses down his nose, screwed his face up and made an excellent Benny Hill. Turned out to be quite a character.
Last evening we went to the Cornish Arms near Padstow for a birthday dinner with Simon, Daniel, Harriett, Dean, Mathew, Rupert and Shelley. (see photo)

Hi everyone
Last night we camped at Wheal Rodney camp site in Marazion, only ones there, nice & quiet.
Took Murphy for a walk had a pint of real ale at the Fire Engine Inn then went to the Harbour to take a photo of St. Michaels Mount, no luck the mist was so thick could only make out the outline.
Not much else to report from there but today I went to Penzance, had a good look around and met a lovely couple who run a secondhand/ Antique shop (see Photo) Alan & Helen of Curios Collectables & Antiques Penzance have a wonderful TIDY shop, puts mine to shame.
It has now given me ideas for when I get back if I want to open up again as a collectables shop.
It has been pouring with rain today, found a lovely site Ayr holiday park overlooking St. Ives Bay, the rain has just stopped.
Simon arrived soaking wet so went for a shower and discovered a bathroom so he had a soak for about three quarters of an hour.

We are going down to the town tonight for a couple of drinks and maybe a meal.

Hi All
writing this in the morning as we have an internet conection.
I missed Johnathan Sampson & John Fogwell off the blog at Alf Resco's , thanks to you both.
We stayed last night at Cosawes Caravan Park at Peranaworthal.
Barry & Dee Cleaton (my Son in law Dean's Parents ) paid for our nights stay + Dee gave me lunch and when Simon arrived and had a shower we went to their home and had Delicious home made Steak & Ale pie, mashed potato, Gravy and various Veg. followed by Plums and custard, Glass of Bitter and Coffee.

Simon has not been sleeping very well as his bed is a little short so we are having a sort around today to give him a better bed.
Today's hello is to my sisters Paula, July and Maureen(the Cherry cake was lovely but it has all gone)
Also to my friends Howard & Thelma + Lucky the dog who live in Dartmouth.

Hi all
Nice to see more followers, I am writing this from the East Crinnis Caravan & Camping park at Par in Cornwall, Betty Olford ( who has had Cancer herself ) was very kind and helpful and along with her husband (who unfortunately I did not meet) gave us free parking and use of all facilities, So a big thank you to them both.
If you are on holiday in the Par area I know a warm welcome will always be there.
My next thank you is to Bob ( Bob the Job ) & Carol Cumpston if you lived in Chudleigh they used to run the DIY shop in the Square who not only put me onto the East crinnis campsite but also arrived with our evening meal, Simon had a saucepan of Chili Concarni? and I had home cooked ham, Eggs, Bread and Beans washed down with a bottle of red wine, it was delicious.
Yesterday Simon rode with Nick Baker the BBC TV animal expert from Brixton to Par ( what a nice chap) and was picked up by Ceri his wife and Elvi? there daughter.
Because I did not do a blog yesterday i would like to thank all the riders who did the first day , Brother Mike, His son Lee , Simon Commerford, Natalie Snell and all Simon's friends.

Hi everyone
What a day, everything went perfectly, great crowd at the start.
Thanks to Alf Fresco's for the great send off and great breakfast.
Nice to meet Simons friends, my friends and family and the ladies who are following us.
According to Simon the ride was good, even the ferryman took them all across the river free of charge.
After I said my goodbyes I went to Plymouth Airport to pick up my son Daniel who flew down from Brighton.
We went to Halfords to buy a bike lock and discovered a crack in the Windscreen, saw a sign for windscreen repair, was quoted £50 by terry kelsall of Glasweld but after he saw the signs on the motorhome he reduced the price to £15 for material only so a big thank you to Terry of Glasweld tel.07765 585275.

Another big thank you to Pat & Basil Cane of Venn Farm Campsite Brixton for the free camping for the night. Motorhome + 2 tents + 4 people + 1 dog. tel. 01752 880378
We are all going to have an early night ready for tomorrows adventure.

Hi Everyone

Just loaded the Motorhome it is now very full only six bags and two boxes to put on in the morning at 6.30. am
I also have to put the spare bike on the back, down to Dartmouth by 8.00 . On the way down at Totnes I have to pick up Flapjack and Cherry cake from my sister Maureen, this will give Simon energy while he is cycling.

Hi everyone
Busy day today.
Went to the hygenist, everything now feels great.
Took the Motorhome th SLJ Motors because the Horn decided not to work, working ok know.
Answered emails, wrote letters and generally got things ready.
4.0 clock went to SJB Signs at Heathfield and had Signs for the Motorhome fitted.
Jamie did an excellent job so if you need any signs he can be contacted at www.sjbsigns.co.uk.
Pictures of the signs posted today.
Murphy is having a haircut tomorrow so I will post a picture of him tomorrow.

John Pearson who runs the business Incar has turned out to be a good friend.
He supplied a Pioneer navigation system and reversing camera at cost price and installed it free of charge because he liked what we were doing.

Good Morning everyone.
What a lovely day, took Murphy to the park, had my breakfast.
Harriett (my lovely Daughter, so much like her mother ) and I are giving the house a spring clean before I go.
Getting quite excited about the trip and I know Simon can't wait to be off.
Thank you to the people who are already following me I hope you will stick with me through the whole ride as I cannot imagine the things I shall see and do.
A better picture of our home for the next 4 months.

Hi to anyone who is reading this first Blog.
Simon and I are nearly ready to go, the motorhome is ready and we are counting the days before we set off from Dartmouth.
I am very encouraged by the number of members of the Camping & Caravanning Club who have responded to our call for one night stops on our trip around Britain, thank you all.
My next thank you goes to Chris Webb Chairman of Chudleigh Parish Council who donated £100 on behalf of the Council.
Once we are on the road I will try to update daily.
